AN Iranian newspaper says an overseas bidder has offered US$1 million for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's 33-year-old car, which he is auctioning off for charity.

The report said various overseas bids had been received by the multilingual website set up yesterday for the auction.

The paper said the top bidders will be invited to the auction, which will be held in mid-February.

Online offers can be made until the end of January.

The 1977 white Peugeot sedan has put up for auction to fund a housing projects for disabled and young people.

The move is seen as an attempt to appeal to the young and bring attention to housing projects Mr Ahmadinejad promoted during his election campaigns, promising to put a roof over the head of every poor Iranian.
